IMPLANT REMOVAL / REPLACEMENT
Breast implant removal or replacement is an operation to improve the appearance of your breasts.
WHAT IS IT?
- Some people who have breast implants decide they would like to change the appearance of their breasts.
- You may decide you would not like to have implants any more.
- You may decide you would like to reduce or increase the size of your breast implants.
- Surgery for breast capsules may include removal of the capsules (capsulectomy) or internal release of the breast capsule (breast capsulotomy).
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
- During your pre-operative consultation you will be able to see breast implants of various shapes and sizes.
- This will give you the best possible idea of how you may look following your breast implant replacement operation.
- Most surgeons will use your old scar to remove your old implant.
- If you have decided to increase the size of your existing breast implant your surgeon may need to perform an internal release of the breast capsule surrounding your breast implant (capsulectomy).
- This will make more space for the implant and can improve the appearance of the cleavage area.
- Breast implant removal or replacement usually takes between 1-2 hours to complete.
- Surgery is normally performed under a general anaesthetic and you will need to stay in hospital overnight.
YOUR RECOVERY
- Most people will be able to carry out light duties the day after your operation.
- Strenuous activity, however, should be avoided for at least 4 to 5 weeks.
- Most people will be able to return to work within 2 weeks although you may need slightly longer if your job involves performing physical duties.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
- The possible complications and side effects following surgery are similar to those of breast enlargement.
- As with any operation there is a higher risk of complications such as capsular contraction with any corrective surgery.
